Fakebusters: Malachite 1

This is actually a really classic example of an expensive naturally occurring crystal being substituted for a cheaper naturally occurring crystal.

Both of these carved shapes are being sold as malachite, however they are definitely not! These shapes are carved from kambaba jasper, another green stone which often has circular markings. The colour is way off for malachite, it should be a brighter green and not as much yellow in it. There will also usually be greater variance in the green tones, from a pale but bright green to a deep green.
